FIFA’s ethics watchdog on Wednesday fined German football legend Franz Beckenbauer some 7,000 Swiss franc ($7,055) for stonewalling an investigation.
He was also warned.
“In the present case, Mr Beckenbauer failed to cooperate with an Ethics Committee investigation… regarding the 2018/2022 FIFA World Cup bids despite repeated requests for his assistance,” FIFA’s ethics panel said in a statement.
FIFA is investigating the awarding of the two tournaments as it faces the biggest graft scandal that has since seen many heads roll.
Beckenbauer has been questioned in an internal German investigation into the matter.
The German was quizzed in relation to a payment of 6.7 million euros to FIFA that the German FA has so far failed to explain.
He has denied any wrongdoing.
